Behind The Scenes ... Photo Shoot

Writer's picture: Deborah ButcherDeborah Butcher

There are so many aspects to running a business! We all have to be multi-faceted and multi-tasking, but there are times when the only thing to do is get the professionals in.

A photo shoot is so much fun, especially when I can abdicate technical responsibility and become chief gofer to the photographer and model.

My products are like my babies. I love them and want them to be seen at their best. So whilst I am obviously the stylist and to some degree the director (in the loosest possible terms), watching a professional photographer and model at work is a totally awe inspiring experience.

Between each set, I get busy with the model styling for the next shot. In this snapshot (unknowingly taken through a window), I am dressing the gorgeous Shannon with one of my latest Hair & Head Wraps.

Of course, I want the images to be aspirational, but it's very important to me, that they are shown in a way that gives confidence to every woman with hair loss issues, so that she can easily achieve the look .

My photographer (F. Mitchell Photography) brought with him a wealth of equipment...light boxes, reflectors, different cameras and lots of other paraphernalia that I couldn't put a name to. Luck was on our side this day and the outside lighting conditions were perfect... Very slightly overcast so that there were no strong shadows or glaring sun. We had the most glorious grounds to shoot in, so Fraser made the most of the conditions, picked up a trusty camera and took Shannon outside to create some amazing shots without the need for additional equipment on many shots. I grabbed my phone for a few seconds and recorded them at work.

Shots were filmed on location at a fabulous country property in Longdon Staffordshire. Thank you to Mrs & Mrs Harris for being such wonderful hosts and allowing us unlimited access to film in their grounds.

Fraser explained to me that the best light for my type of fashion photography is a soft natural light. Photographers spend a fortune on equipment to replicate that. How lucky were we that mother nature did it all for us for a while!

I loved watching the rapport between photographer and model which developed into an easy almost unspoken language of mutual trust as the day progressed. Some atmospheric music playing in the background was punctuated by birdsong and a gentle rustling of the trees in a very light warm breeze ... PERFECT!

I'm sure this happy, relaxed mood will be conveyed in the final shots.

I am really looking forward to seeing those final shots, which will be used to create my latest look book - something I can leave with Macmillan centres up and down the country to help inspire women with chemotherapy hair loss achieve style confidence, as my headwear is also loved as a fabulous fashion accessory by ladies with hair. No doubt, some of the images will appear on my website too.

Sounds like exciting times ahead. Good luck with your headwear designs, I'm sure many ladies out there will find them very useful.
