I love an excuse for a good party...I don't even need an excuse!
BUT, I do have a dilemma when it comes to Halloween.
With traditions imported from America, this annual event has gone ballistic. It's not the over-commercialisation and necessity for plastic tat that gets to me (well I suppose it does get to me).
My issues really come with the door-to-door terrorising of vulnerable people. I'm not talking about little kiddies all dressed up with mommy at the bottom of the drive. I'm talking about adult-sized teenagers in scary masks. Whatever their motives, it's just downright wrong!
My heart reaches out to those elderly and sometimes confused individuals who feel they have to sit in the dark (pretending to be out) for fear of answering the door to someone big and intimidating, hiding behind a latex creation of the most gruesome proportions - for what? - a few sweeties? - really?
I always take my dog with me to the door for those weirdos. He's COMPLETELY FREAKED OUT by them ... and as tall as me when he's on his hind legs. His growl & bark are 100% in defending his territory mode.
The dichotomy here is I also love going to good house party and would happily slug a few too many potions (just to be sociable of course) and admire the lengths the host has gone to, in the creation of a spooky dungeon.
And of course, we can all celebrate the colours of the season, cheering us up under gloomy, grey skies. It's definitely time to bring out the comfy, cosy jumpers & warm knits.
I hope you get to enjoy the upcoming occasion (or not) in the way you choose. Just spare a thought for those who find it a genuine night of terror.
